Caravansérail is a centre for research, production and exhibition of contemporary visual arts. The centre provides exhibition space, workshops and support to emerging artists so that they can design, create and present their work in the region. Since its founding in 2003, Caravansérail has been motivated by the desire to bring art out of the traditional systems for exhibition and present thematic projects and special events in public spaces. The centre’s goal is to not only help promote contemporary art in the region, but also to foster connections between artists and the public. The annual program includes six gallery exhibitions and visits from two or three artists-in-residence for research and artistic creation.
Because Caravansérail is one of the rare organizations that specifically support emerging visual artists and because it initiates extraordinary collaborations with various community organizations, it has become known as a unique art forum in Quebec. The centre’s diverse programming and its interpretive and educational activities provide a vibrant arts showcase for both contemporary art insiders and the general public. In addition, the centre promotes the work of artists by means of high-quality promotional tools and publications released throughout Quebec.
Since 2005, Caravansérail has been a founding member of the Coopérative de solidarité Paradis, an umbrella group for six cultural organizations which offers its members and the artistic community studio facilities and exhibition spaces tailored to their needs. A major building project for the relocation of the Paradis co-operative and all its members is planned for completion by the end of 2012.
